牡丹は、中国でその華麗さや信仰において絶大な人気を誇っていました。日本には、奈良時代頃に薬用として伝わり、江戸中期になって栽培が進み、ようやく人々の身近なものになりました。色とりどりの牡丹と、流れるような長い尾が美しい尾長鳥の組み合わせが華麗な文様です。

Onagadori to Botan (Long-tailed Fowl and Tree Peony)

A tree peony was extremely popular in its splendor and religion in China. It was brought to Japan in the Nara period for a medicinal use. It was not until the middle Edo period that it could be cultivated and become common to everyone.  This pattern is magnificent with a combination of colorful tree peonies and a beautiful streamline of a long-tailed fowl.
