「万寿菊文」

万寿菊文

その形から「饅頭菊」とも書かれる、菊の花を簡略化したこの文様は、江戸時代に尾形光琳の影響を受けた琳派の画家たちによって様式化され、「光琳菊」とも呼ばれています。菊は中国で仙花とされ、延命長寿の力があると信じられていたことから、「万寿」の字が当てられています。

Manjugiku-mon (Manju Chrysanthemum Pattern)

This pattern of simplified chrysanthemums was stylized by painters of the Rimpa school who were influenced by Ogata Korin in the Edo Period. The flower is also known as the “Korin chrysanthemum”. In China, chrysanthemums are considered to be flowers from the mystical land of hermits and are believed to have the power of longevity. Therefore, the word “manju” is written with the Chinese characters meaning “ten thousand lifetimes”.
