「鶏頭」

鶏頭

古くは、奈良時代に大陸から渡来し、染料などに用いられる実用植物として栽培されていました。万葉集では、「韓藍（からあい）」の名で親しまれていました。近世以降、鶏の鶏冠に似た花を付けることから「鶏頭」と呼ばれ、出世栄達の象徴とされています。

Keito  (Plumed Cockscomb)

Plumed Cockscomb was brought from the Asian continent during the Nara Period (646-794 AD) and cultivated as a commercial plant used for dye making. In the Man’yoshu (the anthology of Japanese poetry), it was known as “Karaai”. From the early modern period, it has been called “Keito (Cockscomb)” because its flower resembles a rooster’s cockscomb, and has been used as a symbol of prosperity.
